William Shatner (Born 1931) is a Canadian actor, author, producer, director, screenwriter and singer. In his seven decades of acting, he became a cultural icon for his portrayal of Captain James T Kirk of the USS Enterprise in the Star Trek franchise. He has written a series of books chronicling   his experiences playing Captain Kirk .He also starred in TJ  Hooker (1982-1986) and many other TV shows. Shatner has also pursued a career music and spoken word .He has two Emmy Awards.

“Some Hanukkah memories” - in full – “first of all I'd like to say I recently released a holiday album - I was going to call it Dreidel Dreidel but then I thought better. Maybe I should have - maybe.
I was born in the Notre Dame de Grace neighborhood Of Montreal Quebec Canada to a conservative Jewish family. My paternal Grandfather “Wolfe Schattner” anglicized his family name to Shatner. All four of my grandparents were immigrants from the Austria Hungary and Russian empires location of present day Ukraine and Lithuania.
Third during my childhood the menorah sat in its place on the mantlepiece - it was silver and black from use no matter how often it was polished - it sat on the ledge until it was used - and then it was used with great reverence .
Fourth-my mother standing over a frying pan, pouring in a mixture of potatoes -ground up potatoes into the sizzling fat - the oil - and frying potato pancakes. The memory of potato pancakes with applesauce and the whole family standing around eating pancakes is a memory that is indelible /Happy Chanukah William Shatner/Capt Kirk - Proud Jew.
