Stephen Sondheim (1930- )
One of the most important figures in 20th century musical theater, Sondheim has been praised for having reinvented The American musical with shows that tackle unexpected themes that range far beyond the traditional subjects. His best known works as composer and lyricist include "A funny thing happened on the way to the forum", Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods.
He is also known for writing lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy. He has received an Academy Award 8 Tony Awards more than any other composer, 8 Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier award and a 2015 Presidential Medal of freedom.
In this letter dated October the 26th 1992 addressed to a Gary Lorenz. Sondheim replies to a question about whether he has a favorite composition. Sondheim replies but whilst he does not have a favorite composition he is especially fond of "Someone in a tree" from Pacific Overtures and “Opening doors" from Merrily We Roll Along.
This letter is signed by Sondheim with a beautiful example of his signature.
