Sir Christopher Wren ( 1632 to 1723 ) Sir Christopher Wren was one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history. He was also an anatomist, astronomer and mathematician. He had the responsibility of rebuilding 52 churches in London after the great fire of 1666, including his masterpiece St Paul's Cathedral which was completed in 1710.
This extremely rare ink signature signed “Chr Wren “ is on an off white 4.75 by 4.75 segment of a manuscript Ledger page from an account book kept by the Royal hospital at Chelsea, which was designed by Wren and completed in 1692 .
The date on the document is April 1700. The document is also signed by Lord Ranelagh , the paymaster general and Sir Stephen Fox. The opposite side bears entries that record payments made in April and June 1699. Among the recipients were tradesmen including a plumber, plasterer, Carpenter, painter and bricklayer.
