Manachem Begin (1913-1992) Israeli politician, founder of Likud and the sixth Prime Minister of Israel. Before the creation of the State he was the leader of the militant group lrgun. He became Prime Minister in 1977. His most significant achievement was the signing of a Peace Treaty with Egypt in 1979 for which he and Anwar Sadat shared the Nobel Prize for Peace. Following pressure due to Israeli involvement in Lebanon, he resigned in 1983.
