Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was an American composer, conductor, pianist, author and lifelong humanitarian. He was one of the most significant American cultural personalities of the 20th century. He was one of the most successful and talented musicians in American history. He composed in many styles including symphonic and orchestral music, ballet, film and theater music, choral works, opera, chamber music and works for the piano. His best known work is the Broadway musical “West Side Story”, which continues to be regularly performed worldwide and was made into an Academy Award winning feature film. Bernstein was the first American born conductor to lead an American orchestra. He was music director of the New York Philharmonic and conducted the world's major orchestras. Bernstein was the recipient of many honors, including eleven Emmy Awards, one Tony Award, 17 Grammy Awards including the lifetime achievement.
Leonard Bernstein endorsed this title page excised from his 1961 biography - Bernstein inscribed the dedicatee’s name, (illegible), wished them “Best wishes”. And also wrote two bars of music from his popular ballet, “Fancy Free”. 5.25 x 7.25.
Leonard Bernstein composed the music for the ballet “Fancy Free” first performed by the New York City Ballet in 1944. It was one of his early successes. He went on to adapt it into the hit Broadway musical “On The Town”.
