John Edgar Hoover (1895-1972)

 

Was an American law Enforcement administrator who served as the first Director of the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (F.B.I.)

 

He remained Director until his death in 1972. During his tenure he established a National Blacklist.

 

After his death abuses of power began to surface including harassment of political dissenters and activists and amassing secret files on political leaders. He also collected evidence by illegal means.

He had used his powers to intimidate and threaten others including sitting Presidents.

 

This letter dated August 28th 1957, is on Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead. It is written to a Henry B Donovan stating that the F.B.I. cannot participate in any manner in a series of television programmes concerning the Special Intelligence Services. ( The S.I.S was active from 1940-1946 and was a covert counter intelligence branch of the F.B.I. located in South America.)
